Techniques for Painting Fur:

There are several fundamental shading techniques in painting and drawing. Here is one we find most effective for painting fur:

1. Base Coloring: Start with a neutral, halftone local color, then shade according to volume and lighting. The underpainting should generally be darker than the fur to simulate shadow. Add a layer above for the fur. All brushes have minor color and lightness jitter to enhance realism.
2. Shading: Apply basic shading with a preferred simple brush (hard or soft). Then, add fur strands above, following the form and lighting.
3. Depth and Highlights: Deepen certain areas (e.g., shaded regions among strands near their roots) and add light and highlight accents where needed.
4. Experimentation: Use layer and brush blending modes such as Soft Light, Screen, and Multiply to achieve desired effects.
